Find out what your child experiences in their LAUSD Theatre class.
It's amazing!
Your school has an standards based arts curriculum taught by credentialed arts teachers with decades of experience in their arts fields as well as in the classroom. Using our brand new Arts Instructional Guide as their blueprint our teachers open your child's imagination while guiding his/her joyous exploration of theatre.
What does my child do in theatre class?
- Your children learn specific theatrical skills like improvisation and pantomime and tableau in order to become the characters in a story and to be in the story, bringing it to life. By being in the story and living it, the child has a deeper understanding of the themes inherent in that story.
- They also learn theatre skills such as projection, articulation and stage presence. This helps them with communication skills they will need their whole lives no matter what field they eventually enter. They perform in front of their peers, in small groups and for other students.
- Your children will grow in their ability to creatively problem solve, individually and in groups. Theatre is all about collaboration and so is life.
- And in theatre class they will use theatre strategies to immerse themselves in other curricular subjects. They might become prospectors looking for gold during the gold rush or families of settlers crossing the country in search of a new life. While in character events occur and they will be required to make decisions based on their research and what they know about the characters they have become. They might live the five month journey to California. They might even die on the way. (in character of course) Either way, the student emerges knowing much more about the history by living it than by simply reading it.
- The new brain research has shown that theatre fires those synapses and deepens learning is all curricular areas like nothing else does. As they say, emotion drives attention and attention drives learning and nothing creates emotional involvement like theatre.
- And they will have fun, freeing their imaginations and expressing themselves in ways they can nowhere else in school.
